Abstract:

In this study, Biodegradable film based on starch-kefiran-ZnO was made by casting method. The produced films contain different content of nano ZnO (ZN) (1%, 3%, and 5% wt. ). Also ZN dispersed by ultrasonic homogenizer and added to the starch-kefiran solution. Surface characteristics, thickness, moisture content, water vapor permeability and mechanical properties were investigated. In the images of water droplets, it was observed that the contact angle of starch-kefiran was 89. 67 degrees. By increasing the amount of zinc oxide nanoparticles up to 1%, the contact angle increased significantly to 95. 63 degrees, which means improving the surface properties and hydrophobicity. The water vapor permeability for starch-kefir film (×10− 10 g m-1s− 1Pa− 1) was 3. 12, which was increased to 2. 03 (×10− 10 g m-1s− 1Pa− 1) by increasing the concentration of zinc oxide up to 3%. Tensile strength and Young’ s modulus of the specimens were increased by increasing ZN content up to 3%. On the other hand, elongation at break of the nanocomposites was decreased, simultaneously. It is obvious that, ZN was improved some of the packaging properties of the starch-kefiran film.

Abstract:

Background: Edible films provide a promising alternative to plastic packaging, serving as a matrix for active compounds such as antibacterial agents and enchancing the nutritional content of the packaged product. This study aimed to determine the effect of cinnamon essential oil incorporation on the manufacture of whey-chia seed edible films. Methods: A completely randomized design was applied, testing various concentrations of cinnamon essential oil: M1 (0%), M2 (2%), M3 (4%), M4 (6%), and M5 (8%). A total of 25 samples were analyzed from June to November 2024. The study assessed physical characteristics including tensile strength, elongation, Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR), microstructure, Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Additionally, microbiological characteristics were evaluated, focusing on antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance and further examined through Duncan Multiple Range Test in Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS) version 24.0. Results: The addition of cinnamon oil did not significantly affect the tensile strength and elongation of the whey-chia seed edible film (p>0.05). Tensile strength values ranged from 1.73-2.53 MPa, while elongation values ranged from 64.94-77.36%. However, cinnamon oil had a notable impact on WVTR and antibacterial activity (p<0.01). WVTR values ranged from 6.01 to 9.43 g/mm2.day, and the inhibition zones against E. coli and S. aureus ranged from 10.60 to 11.35 and 10.70 to 14.60 mm, respectively. The 8% cinnamon essential oil concentration was the most effective in improving tensile strength and antibacterial properties, making it suitable for Biodegradable food packaging. EDS analysis showed increased carbon and oxygen content in the films, and FTIR indicated changes in intermolecular interactions, affecting absorption bands of functional groups like -OH and C=O. Conclusion: The treatment with the addition of 8% cinnamon oil concentration was found to be the most effective treatment. DOI: 10.18502/jfqhc.12.1.18363

Abstract:

Microplastics in sewage sludge represent a formidable obstacle to the use of biosolids in agricultural lands. Ultrasonic pretreatment is extensively utilized in sludge management to enhance biodegradability, reduce organic contaminants, and improve process efficiency through cavitation-induced physical and chemical effects. This research evaluates the effects of conventional ultrasonic sludge pretreatment—operating at a frequency of 20 kHz, a power level of 400 W, a temperature of 25°C, and 15 minutes—on sludge containing Biodegradable polyethylene (PE) and non-Biodegradable polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics. Structural, morphological, and chemical analyses were conducted using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The SEM results, obtained at magnifications of 60× (PE) and 100× (PVC) with scales of 500 µm and 300 µm, revealed no major physical modifications, such as cracks, fractures, or surface erosion, in either PE or PVC microplastics. Similarly, surface morphology remained largely unchanged across all examined resolutions, including 500 nm and 300 nm, suggesting their structural stability following treatment. Likewise, FTIR spectra demonstrated the chemical resilience of both polymers, as not major alterations were observed in their characteristic absorption peaks (e.g., 2920 and 2850 cm⁻¹ for PE, 1430 and 1250 cm⁻¹ for PVC). Overall, the findings indicate that conventional ultrasonic sludge pretreatment exerts negligible influence on the physical and chemical integrity of the studied microplastics, highlighting their resistance to ultrasonic cavitation and potential persistence in sewage sludge used for agricultural applications.

Abstract:

This paper discusses about the lapping process for both metallic and nonmetallic Materials. The experiments were carried out based on the RSM design of experiments (DOE) approach to investigate the effect of their parameters on the lapping quality of ball bearing, for predicting the new results. This study explored the modification for fine finishing of bearing balls through Biodegradable medium (Aloe Vera) and silicon carbide (SiC) powder as an abrasive in addition of conventional oil-based media having an advantage like Antioxidant, antibacterial, non– toxic, good compression, and shear stresses. Spindle speed (rpm), Time (minutes), Force (N), Abrasive concentration were considered as the input process variables while the PISF, MRR and surface Roundness was considered as the process response. The result shows the most significant parameter for maximum PISF of 82. 3%, 7. 6 mg/min MRR and 9. 05μ m roundness was achieved with 672 rpm at 7. 5 N forces, 37. 5% abrasive concentration, 165 minutes’ experimental run time was achieved.
